IFLA LAC 40 years

IFLA and the Latin-American and Caribbean: 40 years of history (1974 – 2014)

The International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions (IFLA) is the leading international body representing the interests of library and information services and their users. It is the global voice of the library and the profession. Founded in Edinburgh, Scotland, on September 30, 1927 at an international conference has today 1700 members in about 150 countries around the world. IFLA was registered in the Netherlands in 1971 and it is headquartered in the Royal Library, the National Library of the Netherlands in the Hague.

In 1974, during the Washington Conference, it began the formal relationship between IFLA and Latin America and from then strengthened, especially since the creation of the Permanent Committee for Latin America in 1976, whose first president was Professor, Dr. Adolfo Rodriguez, renowned Mexican librarian and also, with the establishment of the Regional Office of the IFLA / LAC in Mexico in 1979. These two important facts have consolidated IFLA in Latin America and the Caribbean.

The Brazilian library community is honored to host important events from March 24th to 28th 2014, comprising:

- Midterm meeting of the IFLA/LAC Permanent Committee;

- Workshop “Strengthening Library Associations” – attending the BSLA Program (Building Strong Library Associations) coordinated by IFLA, sponsored by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and oriented managers associations of librarians in Latin America and the Caribbean;

- Seminar ” Tradition, Innovation and Cooperation: new frontiers for access”

And in this context to celebrate 40 years of fruitful relationship between IFLA and the Latin American and Caribbean region, rescuing the history of the project development impact in the region and also observe how IFLA/LAC have been working and promoting the librarianship development in Latin America and the Caribbean .

From March 24th to 28th, Sao Paulo will become the Librarian Capital of Latin America and the Caribbean, where librarians and information professionals coming from different countries of the region will promote exchanges of experience and will design activities focused on the professional development of librarians and expansion and the modernization information services, counting on the unconditional support of IFLA and its programs, as BSLA and Coordination of the Standing Committee for Latin America and Caribbean Regional Office and the IFLA/LAC.

The Brazilian Federation of Library Associations, Information Scientists and Institutions – FEBAB, member of IFLA, which for more than 50 years has promoted the development of the profession and of librarians in Brazil, USP ( the Department of Information Science, Faculty of Philosophy , Sciences and Letters of Ribeirão Preto and the Integrated Library System), as well as other institutions that are part of Brazil librarians at IFLA, express the joy of living that moment of connection and integration and invite everyone to participate.
